Iligan Rotary Club's President talks about Development
Rotary Club, Iligan City - Mr. Arnold
"Aji" Garbanzos shared his perspective
on how can Iligan City achieve development. In his letter, he pointed out a
number of negative declarations that cloud people’s minds and how these limit
the attainment of success. He firmly believes in the power of positive
affirmation as a great start towards the realization of the long dreamed development
because it is only through it that we can share our aspirations together, draw strength
from it and translate it into massive action towards progress.
Dear Friends,
Maayong Iligan!!
One of the saddest traits of an Iliganon is his/her negative declarations. Just consider the following please:
1. Ask an Iliganon how he would identify himself as coming from Iligan and the next thing he does is swear and curse (people call it doing the "latin")-a negative declaration;
2. Go to Maria Cristina falls (Iligan's number one tourist spot) and the next thing you hear is that a suicide occured there between two sisters-again a negative declaration;
3. Ask an Iliganon what he can say about Iligan's number one blessing-Lake Lanao-and
the next things he says, "it is the biggest toilet in the world"-again another negative declaration;
Is it any wonder therefore, that even our number one neighbor-Cagayan de Oro- treats us negatively.
Take the case of the foreigners who wanted to come to Iligan way back in the 80's and ask the permission of a former mayor to come over and this is how the mayor answered, "Go to Iligan at your own risk". A statement which up to now has not been properly answered by Iligan. A challenge for all Iliganons.
Or remember the time when Maria Cristina Falls was shown on international TV, when Cagayan de Oro was the main feature? There was never a mention that the falls was located in Iligan. Cagayan de Oro was prominently featured but not Iligan. And at a time when there was supposedly a CIC or Cagayan-Iligan Corridor!
It is because of these negative declarations, that the Rotary Club of Iligan came up with a poster campaign-declaring blessings not only upon our city, but even upon our country, Malacanang and Marawi as well. With the hope that by doing this we will be able to pronounce more blessings upon our beloved city-Iligan.
This is also the primary reason
why among the cities of the Philippines it is only Iligan which has a greeting
that goes this way, “Maayong Iligan”
which literally means “a good or kind Iligan”- a greeting which is popularized
by our current Mayor.
The Holy Word says that in
"the tongue lies the power of life or death". We are therefore praying that with
this campaign we will be able to change the paradigm or mindset of our fellow
Iliganons and bring positive declarations upon our city-not only from
ourselves but even from our neighbors and most importantly from
Malacanang-the seat of national leadership.
May we request that it be prominently displayed in your school, in your offices and other public places, so that people may learn how blessed we are as a nation and as a city.
We want to achieve the same
friendly results set as an example between the cities of Dipolog and Dapitan-
as neighbors, where a Dipolognon would normally say, "Friend, your stay
in Dipolog would not be complete until we visit Dapitan". We dream
of that day when an Iliganon would say, "your stay in Iligan is not
complete until we visit Marawi" or a Kagay-anon would say, "Iligan
is a blessed place, go there and enjoy the best our country can offer".
This is our gesture of saying that we-the Rotary Club of Iligan- cares for the future of our city and that Iligan has a great future in God! Thank you and God bless!! We must all reach within and embrace humanity, President Arnold "Aji" Garbanzos |
