REACT Philippines, Inc. spearheads a Tree-Growing Activity in Iligan City
March 4, 2012 will be another memorable day
as the Regional Emergency Assistance Communications Team (REACT) spearheads Pag-amping sa Kinaiyahan: A Tree- Growing Activity. This is one of
the organization’s projects to promote environmental
conservation through planting trees in collaboration with local schools and
community-based working groups. Brgy. Digkilaan, Iligan City was chosen as the venue for tree-growing because it
is one of the greatly affected areas of the flashflood caused by typhoon
Sendong barely two months ago.
Over 600
participants comprised of the students, constituents of the said barangay, local
officials, members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines will be planting 2,000
seedlings of trees.
“This is one of
the ways to educate the constituents about environmental
consciousness and encourage them towards responsible stewardship of the
environment,” says REACT Deputy Group Chief, Mr. Vladimir Tenorio.
REACT partnered with the MSU-IIT Master in Business Management Student Board, 2nd Mechanized
Infantry Brigade, 4th
Mechanized Infantry Battalion, 35th IB Infantry Battalion, and Councilor
Frederick Siao to organize the upcoming activity.
“We are indeed grateful to our sponsors including
Cebuana Lhuillier, Jollibee Iligan, Nature’s Spring, and Edge 95.9 FM to help
us realize the event,” Ms. Carmelen Demecillo, the Event Chairperson expressed.
Members of PNP Iligan will also join the activity as peace-keeping force and ABS-CBN Iligan will cover the event.
“Let us be one in this worthwhile endeavor.
Together we will REFURBISH ILIGAN!!!”
WoW, this is a massive endeavour, indeed!! Good luck, Iliganons. More power to all of us!!
ReplyDeleteOn the second thought, WHERE have been these more than 600 strong Iliganon environmentalists all these years, BEFORE "Sendong" struck Iligan City and its environs?
ReplyDeleteIt seemed that no one blinked his/her eyelash when the illegal loggers, as well as the licensed timber concessionaires wantonly stripped our virgin forests down!!
It seemed that the custodians of our forests closed their eyes. The City government and its agencies and agents seemed to have connived with the insatiable lusts of the timber businessmen and concessionaires. We did not hear loggers apprehended, much less been brought to prison. The silence have been madly deafening.
After these deadly logs razed the houses and the lives of the Iliganons, have our City government and agents lifted a finger to run after the culprits of this massive devastation?
What good will our replanting of trees be, when the rapacious vultures still hover our envisioned "forests." They're still scot-free and ready to devour their helpless and hapless prey!!
I do love this kind of activities a Tree Planting because doing like this I know I can help to protect our environment. Hope next time I can enjoy this kind of activity in Iligan, I also want to visit this place. Thanks.
